South Carolina Bar Leadership Academy
Chelsea R. Rikard
In 2019, I had the privileged opportunity to be selected from South Carolina’s Young Lawyers to participate in the South Carolina Bar’s Leadership Academy. My fellow Academy members, included attorneys from non-profit organizations, public defender’s offices, Attorney General’s office, and owners of small firms like myself. The diverse perspectives of each of the member’s made for rich conversation regarding leadership styles and methods, the importance of attorney volunteerism in our state, and personal experiences within the legal profession. Leadership comes in many forms and is not always directly related to one’s profession. I learned that, as lawyers, we are particular well suited to effectuate lasting, positive change in our communities and our state. I was particularly thankful for this opportunity because I received training on how to become a better leader within my firm, my community, and within the South Carolina Bar. I appreciated and enjoyed my time in the Academy so much so, that I am helping plan a session in Greenville for the 2020 Academy. I hope to continue to teach important leadership skills, and to instill the importance of giving back, in any way one can.
